DAVID ROBERTSON
WRITER / DIRECTOR/ PRODUCER
“If I can continue to produce and bring forth works that change the way people think about life and the world around them then I am doing my work.”
David Robertson credits movement as the reservoir from which he sources his creative energy. Whether producing, directing, writing or choreographing, he admits, simply, “movement is where I come from; it’s what I am made of.” Robertson discovered a rhythm to the why’s and how’s of his professional training to deliver a unique artistic identity to make available to the industry.
Robertson began that journey training at New York’s acclaimed High School of Performing Arts, Joffrey School of Ballet, Alvin Ailey’s American Dance Theatre and the Bernice Johnson cultural Arts Center (where he would later act as Artistic Director.)
As Robertson demonstrated his artistry and unique creative identity Choreographers / Directors Debbie Allen, George Faison, Walter Painter and the late Lester Wilson and Michael Peters ushered him into the next phase of his artistic life as Director /Choreographer. Those collaborations included numerous pioneering music videos, like Two Tons of fun “It’s Raining Men” Lionel Ritchie “Dancing on the Ceiling” and Michael Jackson’s “Thriller.”
Television projects like “Carnevale” an Italian variety show “The Liberty Ceremonies” “The 48th Annual Tony Awards”, “The 54th Annual Emmy Awards”, “The 61st and 62nd Annual Academy Awards.” Film projects like “Trois Place Pour Le Vingt Six” with French actor Yves Montand, Disney’s productions of “Polly” and “Polly: Coming Home” and “Stompin at the Savoy.”
These experiences created Robertson’s love of film he co-wrote a feature “Hard Skills,” which was shot in Paris France. Produced, wrote and directed two short films, “What’s Inside the Casing,” and “Not Like This.” Not Like this was screened at the LAIFF festival in Los Angeles California.
Looking toward the future, David Robertson welcomes new evolutions to become a multi-faceted creative artist. Producing his first documentary entitled “Up in the Air.” The film is about the challenges of systemic racism that Black dancers and choreographers in the US face. It centers around the late Director/Choreographer Louis Johnson best known for his work “The Wiz” movie.
